Update: January 2009
Now in Colorado Springs, Colorado, working, enjoying family and friends, re-learning to drive on snow and ice with varying degrees of success, and generally trying to enjoy life.
As always, I'm missing New Zealand, but looking foward to new adventures traipsing the globe.
Update: June 2007
No longer off-world, but still sporting that particular mentality. Currently in Phoenix. Tentatively adjusting to surface-of-the-sun temperatures, reacquainting myself with good Mexican food, giant glasses of iced tea, affordable gym memberships and Blue Bell Ice Cream. Oh, and totally missing NZ!
Pre-June 2007
I'm a Yankee now living off-world in Christchurch, New Zealand. The cosmos led me to this small, ferny, sheep-filled country in 1998 after graduating from University. I put my degree in PR to some use the first time around working for a oldies radio station in Tauranga (North Island). It was a quick six months of working, traveling, eating and laughing and then it was over.
I returned in July of 2004 because I didn't get enough of the place the first time around. People ask me, "Why New Zealand?" My answer, "Why not." A different perspective is what its all about.
I'm a Colorado girl, proudly hailing from Denver. Go Broncos! My family moved to Houston my senior year in High School and up until my move down under, that's where I was.
Life is a challenge and it seems I like going far afield to meet those challenges. Not for everyone, but it's worked for me. For the time being, at least.
No really, I came back because I left part of myself behind the first time and I had to come back to check that that part wasn't having too much fun without me. And there are certainly some crazy ways to have fun down here. I highly recommend abseiling 300 feet into a hole in the earth (cuz it's there), surfing sand dunes near 90-mile beach, watching Hectors Dolphins in Akaroa Bay, jetboating on the Waimak River, Horse trekking in Queenstown, Rockin' Ropes in Taupo....the list goes on.
As the last stop before Antartica, New Zealand is a schnazzy (yes, the "ch" is deliberate) place to live, work, and play. For the moment, I'm here, things are interesting, and now I'm sharing.
I have a cool job in hip spot, where there are lots of folks with funny accents who drink lots of coffee. Okay, that was vague, I know. I manage an office. (God only knows what my employers were thinking giving me power over things like PR, accounts and office supplies--probably the clean air, who knows). And I walk to work every day because I can. It rocks and my thighs are thanking me for it.
I do whinge about life down here occasionally, but when I do, its still in the most loving way--really, it is--so please, no hateful comments about stupid Americans, blah, blah, blah. There are plenty of political, hate-mongering places you can comment, so go there if you are so inclined.
Full-on belly laughter daily, reading, writing, outdoors, movies, friends
